I am looking for a business card transcription company - Data Quality and Cleansing

We organize several events each year and collect business cards of attendees.Because of our partnership model only 65% of our registration data is accurate. We transcribe business cards to fill the gap. Please let me know if you have used a company you can refer.I like shoeboxed but they do not offer contract.Thank you in advance

Hi Nadine,There is an app that could help. Please have a look at the following Topliners Article: atEvent Card Scanner App I hope this gives you ideas what is possible.Best regards,Jacob

Love the atEvent people they are great. One pretty cheap and simple app is CamCard. Works really well scanning business cards.

Thank you Jacob and CullenI like all the apps out there but they can't handle the volume I have ?Throughout a year I can have up to 75K business cards I need processing.

I would suggest buying a business card scanner then: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Electronics-Business-Card-Scanners/zgbs/electronics/5728046011

Thanks Cullen,We have 3 scanners but it is still very slow.We were looking to outsource that process to free some of our data entry person time.

Only 3? just kidding... Yea that can be challenging

We decided to work with Shoeboxed. I have to say one month in with, I can say they are impressive. They are quick and reliable.I had my business cards processed in no time, they took care of shipping removing the burden of dealing UPS. My data is available in the cloud. Let me know if you want to give them a try. Here is the link to their website http://ssqt.ch/1c3oVdpTake care

You authorize it with your own acquiring bank. For that you need a merchant bank account, some expensive software and hardware, a dedicated line to the bank and the expertise to maintain such a system. In short, you can't
The specifics to do that are dependent on the authorizing entity you use, contact them to see the interface they support.Only the very largest of organisations do this themselves. Nearly everyone will use a dedicated piece of EFT software from a vendor who has a special relationship with the acquiring banks, or an EFT hosting service from one of those vendors. Banking standards are both very complicated to adhere to, and very dynamic. An individual simply isn't up to the job of keeping track.
c)What type of security will be recommended for such an application.Dedicated comms to the acquiring bank, usually. There is some move towards online auth over TCP/IP, eg, t'Internet, but still the security requirements will be large

Once again, the specifics on the interface will be dependent on the authorizing entity you use, contact them to see the interface they support.Basically, at this stage, there's little you can do. If this is work for your employer, they need to get in touch with their business manager at their bank, and say "we wish to process card transactions online". Depending on your projected turnover, he'll advise you on your best approach. It could be to use an online service like WorldPay, or the bank may offer a beaureau service to you, or they may steer you in the direction of a specialist software vendor that can help you. But until you've spoken to the banks you want to acquire with, there's nothing you can do yourself. Common card schemes like Visa and Mastercard, your own bank will acquire, others, such as American Express and Diners Club are acquired by the sponsors themselves, that is, you'd need a commercial relationship with Amex to accept Amex, a commercial relationship with Diners Club to accept Diners Club. But I repeat, your first contact for this is your bank manager. If this is an e-commerce website, things might be a bit simpler, there are a few online services (probably even some web services by now) to help you. If it's tills in shops, you might be advised to use PDQ machines. Setting up and maintaining large-scale EPoS is a massive undertaking, and often involves specialist vendors
If it's work for your self, forget it. Just take PayPal or something
Oh yeh, and authorising the card online is only half the fun. All that says is "the card is valid, and the funds are available for the transaction *at this time*". You've then got to settle the transactions in order for funds to actually move to your account, and that's even more complicated than authorisation. You'd also need to work around the fact that at this time doesn't mean and also when you settle so expect some transactions to authorise ok, but to be suspended (not paid) at settlement time. Then there's hot-card management - you'll be issued with files detailing known stolen or lost cards, and check against them yourself - cheaper on the comms than going online all the time. It's a minefield

If you have to be asking this question,....That's a little unfair, to be honest. I used to write EFT software, and spent quite a lot of time helping retailers get their online auth. projects off the ground. Even very experienced guys usually don't have a clue what's involved in taking cards. It was much more cost effective for them to just pay for one of us to be onsite to hold their hand, than to have developers sitting around trying to decipher reams of convoluted messaging formats and validation rules that might change next week anyway

The amount of shenanigans going on nowadays is positively frightening.Indeed. Luckily, the acquiring banks require that a CC system goes through a process called accreditation, which basically involves a suite of dummy transactions covering most scenarios, to make sure it works. Things can still go wrong, but since basically they don't simply allow any Tom Dick or Harry to process cards, most of the time it's pretty safe. It's one of those things that are best left to people with actual domain expertise, and the banks generally help enforce that. Usually, when things go wrong, it's the merchant, rather than the customer, that suffers. Like the English Premiership football club that misconfigured their system horrendously, failed to bank any money for months and only found out when they bought a player and the cheque bounced :-)
You won't find anyone actually processing CC transactions themselves, that doesn't have the expertise to do it properly. Almost everyone buys in a solution for it. Sometimes, a retailer will get hold of the manuals, try it themselves, fail hideously, sink a load of cash into a dead project, and then buy in a solution

Seeking disseration project in EJB.I can do it for free!

Hi all,
I m an undergraduate student majored in CS, and I am preparing my final year disseration at the moment. Due to my personal interest and strength, I've narrowed my topic to Java, J2eeEJB, WebService and So on.
Neither my tutor nor myself have a project from the real world. Someone suggested me to write a on-line shopping based on EJB, bu this kind of apps are everywhere nowadays. i also tried Supply-chain-management, but gave up coz it's too hard for me to fingure out what i need to do without a specific requirment.
I would be very grateful if someone here in this forum can offer me a project, or at least a detailed business requirment documentation. Idealy, if you have to happy an interesting project to be implememted, i can do it for u for free!
I know that there are several big supermarket chains in Canada and the US that are looking to upgrade their systems to incorporate inventory control for incoming shipments, online shopping and delivery (with photographs) of all their products, transfers from store to store, special discounts and flyers, printing the coupon magazines themselves instead of hiring aa advertizing firm. You can also order specific products, both online and in person. Furthermore, all of the store managing capabilities are done with this system such as payrolls and employee vacation time, incentives, charitable donations with food and money. I am not saying to develop this for them as they hire big consulting firms for that. But this would be a great prototype as none of them use J2EE as a technology. This would also help the technology get out there in that specific market as several competitors have a good share of it.
Just though it would be a good idea for a dissertation.

Thanks. Sounds like an exciting project. Is there any way to get a detailed Business requirement documentation?
Here are the things you have to consider for a project:
1) Develop a user requirements document. You have to imagine the needs of the client, such as what are going to use their system for, who are you targeting (managers, cashiers, inventory control, accountants for payroll...). You can use use cases and a business case for the project. Things like upgrading from a simple cash register and reducing the tons of paperwork associated to inventory and payrolls.
2) Define the best architecture by specifying the J2EE bits and pieces that you will use. UML is good for this as you determine the component and deployment diagrams. Show how the users will be using the system and the types of hardware necessary. This should include the costs.
3) Develop class diagrams and interaction diagrams to understand the flow of activities. Activity diagrams are also good.
4) Develop the thing
If you were in a concrete business deal, you would have to go into more depth. This is only skimming the surface.

A Little Help With My Final Year Project

Hi ! I am just about to start my final year project. But I still havent decided yet on what exactly the project is to be.
I want to do a web based system for the real estate industry.
(I want to do using java and xsl.) Can anyone give me some ideas as
what sort of innovative things I can design (for real estate system).
Search is present most such systems, but some other designs that would
really be practically useful for the industry.
Any help is Appreciated.
Thanking in Advance.
What about a Digital Resource Management sub-system to cope with the range of media assets that Estate Agents might manage? This could include xml definitions, a document transformation engine, access rights, storage mechanisms, etc. As this is for school you'll probably go no further than implementing sub-system interfaces for most of the common services that you'll be needing but at least it gives you a chance to show an architectural understanding, the ability to comprehensively model using UML and the creation of loosely coupled implementations.
One of the coolest property sites I've seen ( in Ireland ),
is www.myhome.ie.
When you drill down to a particular property, you can click on "Map"
to see a map of the area. You can even zoom down to see actual aerial photographs of just about any area in Dublin county.
The more expensive properties have 3D walkthroughs.
Maybe you could display floorplans ?
Okay, much of that is quite graphics intensive.
How about a Web site for non estate agents / property owners.
Where users fill in a predefined form, and can upload photos.
Then they're immediately browsable / searchable online.
Well, it could work for estate agents too.
They bring a laptop to the property, take pictures of the house, and
upload them immediately to the website.
Even floorplans could be scanned in and uploaded.
regards,
Owen
Think about integration points and strategies with related parties. When you buy a house you need a surveyor? Link to a surveyor's system. Define a document-centric web services interface, perhaps even looking up the provider from a pseudo-UDDI server, to allow for the interchange. Look at some of the conversation-orchestration standards that are emerging. What about a defined interface out to the internal invoicing / payments system? All of these things need move no further than the design / analysis phase but they're all going to earn you points, (assuming that they're not going to restrict their evaluation to implemented code, (in which case change university)).
Write a technical architecture document up front. Look at RUP & xTreme programming for selecting a development approach, (or any other 2 that conflict to some extent).
Make the project ambitious in conception but narrow in implementation. Talk about what could be done, design how it could be done but only do a VERY small sub-set of the possible.
Thanks Guys;
If there are any more ideas, please let me know.
Thanks Again
How about a page hit counter per advertisement.
Then the estate agent can estimate the level of interest in each property ?
From these statistics you could generate a "top 10 hot properties" list.
Maybe broken down by market segment eg.
top 10 apartments
top 10 houses ( 0 - $100,000 )
top 10 houses ( $100,000 - $200,000 )
top 10 houses ( $200,000 + )
It would help those parasitic estate agents to justify their enormous fees by saying they had 200 people on-line looking at the house.
Hey, charge them 2% of the value of their houses ( plus VAT/sales tax) for your software, see how they like it !!!
regards,
Owen
..
Try something not too complicated... Like an applet on a web page that automatically processes and emails orders or questions. It would check if a house was available, the condition, the price, ...
How about having the current status of each of the house (occupied, available for rent, being built, etc). Also, you can have a subsystem that allows booking the house for sight seeing so that the booking is being pursued by some contractor.
You can also have the system give the public phone numbers and/or the email addresses of the owners.. You could also list all the utility that is available in and around the area like schools, stores, etc. Of these, choose some to implement!
Thanks Fellows. Thats a lot of suggestions. I cant implement too
many stuff cause that would take too much time. On the other hand
I need to design something that has to satisfy the examiners that its providing something new for the practical user.
I tried to search for many of the existing real estate sites, but most of them seems to have only 'search facility' as a major functionality.
I'll let you know what I decided on finally. But I am still open for
more suggestion ...
Any way Thanks a lot ...
.
I would appreciate more suggestions ...
(also if any one of you knows some good sites)
Thanks

Text Mining Algorithm

We are building a desktop application which will mine the business news available over the Internet and use it for forecasting the stock market. We are now stuck up at the algorithm which should be used. Can Bayesian Networks be used? Or do we have to make a new algorithm altogether?
Thank you.
Arunraj
You plan on forecasting the stock market but you're "stuck" at the algorithm?
Hello, thank you for replying.
By "stuck up" we mean that we are not able to do the implementation part in Java. As there is not enough content available on the Internet, we dont understand how will the implementation actually start.
Points taken into consideration are:
1. Rate the news(good or bad).
2. Plot graph of the quotes of a Company in the last fortnight.
Using these two parameters we try to predict the stability of the company.
Your valuable inputs are always welcome.
There is more than enough available, for the right price.
There are many specialised companies doing exactly that, buying raw data from stock markets etc. and analysing it.
More I cannot say as I'm under an NDA after working for just such a company for several years.
Can you please provide some useful sites that i can refer to for completing this. We have chosen this topic as our final year project and would value your every possible help in this.

Digital Body Language on Print?

Unless you have been living in the jungles of Costa Rica or have totally abandoned all things print, you likely have seen these cute little abstracts. http://khason.net/offtopic/microsoft-tag-vs-qr-tag/http://www.tourismkeys.ca/blog/2009/01/what-is-a-2d-bar-code/ QR Tags (b&w) or Microsft Tags (retro colors) have been popping up everywhere - banner ads, fashion magazines, the car show and the good old newspaper. These have been around for over a year but adoption has grown significantly in the last quarter. Both promises to enable you to "grow your business with the web-aware cell phone toting traveler". Interesting thought.  The folks who developed these also made it easier for you as a marketer to apply it in your strategies and made it easy for your target audience to consume it. In addition, these allows you to connect to anything social. Imagine the possibilities!  I have tried to interact with a couple and so far the offerings are a tad lame - one example, it was on the dvd case of a movie i just watched and it offered me a trailer of that movie - I guess i should have tried it before watching the whole thing! Although my experience was seemingly lame, I am sure that Dreamworks now has ALL my information including 3 minutes of my life that I can never take back plus the few more minutes I will spend on future Megamind campaigns (btw, i did enjoy Megamind - smart movie).  Consumer marketing is of course embracing this and I am sure it is already making its way through the business to business stream. No matter what organizations you market to, we all market to people - very curious people. It is another creative way to engage and connect.
Hey Nadia. I put a QR code on my entrepreneurial business card two years ago.  Folks didn't know what to do with it.  At the time, the iPhone scanner apps were a bit weak.  But that was a while back.   Things have changed.  QR codes and smart phone scanning apps have come a long way.  Th.ere is a reason you're seeing more nowadays. There's a ton of scanners available on android and iphone.  Additionally, 2d (barcode) scanners are rocking.  I can scan a bar code at homedepot to see which competitors are underselling, then negotiate a discount right on the spot.  Power to me!!! Maybe dreamworks is still aslumber.  But there's no reason why we gotta be.  It'd be cool if Eloqua could track all the leads that were derived from peeps scanning my codes.  In fact, that would be BADASS. QR-illy Yours, J
Exactly my thought - it will be crazy cool if we track these. I am checking in with our team on the feasibility!
Now I am all worked up.  Scan this to read my thoughts.  Generated # kaywa.com
This is pretty cool.  I've started noticing this on adverts on the London Tube.  To answer your question: A link is likely all you need, considering a smartphone will be web enabled, and cookie tracking is persistent.  You may wish to include a small form gate, collecting email, to marry up the cookie on my iPhone to my contact record.   Happy Marketing!  Kindly, -R
One comment, though, while we want to 'track' and 'convert' as much as we can, we need to respect the medium here.  It may not be the right medium to serve up a small form gate, immediately.  Remember, you can always track uplifts, and moreover, if your content is appealing, and you can lead them on a more substantial journey during that event, perhaps a more suitable opportunity will arise to offer a small form for conversion. Happy experimenting!  Looking forward to hearing to other experiences!  Kindly, -R
Couln't you just put a query sting on the URL? I have not used these much but that is how I would think about tracking the visitors.
Yes! Absolutely.  If there are tracking scripts directly on the page. But if it's not tracked, or cannot be tracked, such as PDFs, then you would need to use a redirect link. Once tracked, use an activity based filter looking for all contacts, or setup a page tag and report on all visitors, known & unknown.
I am seeing a lot of QR codes and MS Tags nowadays, from labels on trees sold at Lowes to inside Orbit gum packs.  My favorite was a QR code that appeared on a flyer for http://austineatsfoodtour.com/.  The QR spawned a link to the Android Marketplace.  The app made it super easy to find, schedule and reserve a seat on the tour.
The QR Cloud Component is now available and can be used to gather Visitor and Contact data as well as query string and static values from your Landing Page visitors. The component is designed to supply this information to a blind Form submission. Your visitors can then be re-directed or sent email notifications using Form Processing. For more information, please see Installing and Using the QR Code Cloud Component.
